This is for guys only. A sure fire way to get the perfect saddle tilt adjustment. Put on your baggiest, softest old shorts you have, not cycling shorts. No underware.Get on your bike, ride around the block. Try riding in the drops. If it doesnt feel right(hurts!) start adjusting the nose of the saddle down. When it stops hurting, stop adjusting(duh). When you are in cycling shorts they support you. Now with the saddle set in a non-pain position to start with the comfort level goes way up in cycling shorts. I had a Italian book about cycle training that had that this in it on setting up the bike. Sounds a little weird but really works well. gears to you.

Hello everyone,
My name is John and I recently moved to the area. I have started getting back into cycling after a couple unintended hiatuses and was wondering if anyone was planning on or would like to carpool to a couple events this summer. Flying Wheels Century June 13th, Possible Tour de Blast June 20th, STP (reserved Sat morning parking spot only, 2 day ride with night in Portland), and maybe another ride in late August. I have a car with car rack that has 3 slots and a van with a roof rack. My email is a good place to contact me. Have a safe ride everyone.

Is there some way back country horsemen olympic chapter and your membership could get together and both of us get educated on how to keep horse calm around bicycles. Because I think with your help and co operation we can all get along on trails and road ways. I know the bch chapter I belong to is commited to keep trails open to mt. bikes as well as hikers and motorized. but we need to come together instead of accusing each other of things.

Subject Regarding Horse & Bike Co-existence

Was there any further discussion or follow-up on this? I'm at a point where I'd like to hear and participate in some reasoned discussions, because I'm frankly out of patience with horses and their riders at both Banner & Stottlemeyer.
I'm one of those citizens who used to dismount, move to the side of the trail and speak to the horses in soft soothing tones to keep everyone calm.
But no more. I see no such reciprocal show of courtesy or stewardship from the horse riders for the trails, and I have yet to see any horse riders exhibit the same concern for the trails by cleaning up after their horses per county regulations.
Yes, let's get together and talk. Not just about what I as a cyclist can do to keep your horses calm, but also what horse riders can do to minimize the damage and mess you create.

I rode a loop from Illahee, to Gorst, to Seabeck, to Silverdale and back. For people who've never done it, some things to think about.
1) There is a back way from PSNS to Gorst. I think I took 1st ave up a big hill, L Marion, R Arsenal, L Loxie Eagens, L Union, turns into 3rd, R Kent, R Sherman Heights, to Gorst. 2) There are a LOT of rollers. 3) There are about 3 big hills: Bear Creek Dewatto Rd,Dewatto Rd, and Anderson Hill.
The massive rain and 2 hail storms didn't help either. :)

well, today was my first experience commuting to and in Seattle and I can say that I am not worried to much if I have to bike from Bainbridge to the UW district. That is not too much extra mileage. I have to thank Dave S. and his wife Nancy of Kingston who I just happened to meet on the ferry this morning for providing the info I needed when I needed it. Just park somewhere on BI like I did such as a park ride lot, pedal on down to the 1st ferry which leaves at 520 am arrives in Seattle at 0555 and than add 30 minutes for biking to UW (course opens for 2 day riders at 515 so you would be roughly 60 minutes late starting unless you bike Friday and stay in a motel or friends and than bike a wee bit from where ever you can. Most buses don't seem to start service till 6 am on Saturdays. My total extra mileage with plan B was 15 miles, 5 miles on BI, 10 miles along Elliot Bay trail, raod to Nickerson ave, fremont bridge, Burke Gilman trail to UW and Lot E-1. I hope this post is helpful. If anything is misleading or wrong let me know and I will clarify. Thanks again Dave and Nancy!

Subject Olympic Discovery Trail’s Adventure Rout

My name is Deborah Anastasi Black, and I’m with the Olympic Peninsula Visitor Bureau. I’m contacting you because we would like to share information with West Sound Cycling Club members about the Olympic Discovery Trail’s Adventure Route, and to encourage a ride leader to bring a group of folks out for a fall ride! I’d like to ask your advice about the best way to share this information with your members.
While most cyclists are familiar with the Olympic Discovery Trail, which will extend from Port Townsend through Forks and out to La Push and the Pacific upon completion, only a few elite mountain bikers have, as of yet, experienced the outstanding ODT Adventure Route. The Adventure Route is an incredible off-road ride that starts near the Elwha bridge on Highway 112 (near the junction of Highway 112 and Highway 101) and heads west, connecting with the Lyre River railroad grade after 22 miles. From there, it heads south to Lake Crescent. The approximately 25-mile-long route is a mix of very well-built and well-signed singletrack and doubletrack, which is also popular with equestrians and hikers. The trail traverses beautiful forests with views to the south to the Olympics and to the north over the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Vancouver Island.
Following are links to a couple of articles that have been published about the Adventure Route.

Poulsbo Trails Commmittee just sent out copies of this report. (links below): They might be useful information for contacting legislators. Bicycling and Walking in the United States: The 2010 Benchmarking Report highlights data on biking and walking levels, safety, funding, policies, and more from 50 states and the 51 largest U.S. cities.
States and cities are ranked on a number of indicators including bicycling and walking levels, safety, and funding. The report also highlights the great disparities that exist between bicycling and walking levels, safety, and funding: While 10% of trips in the U.S. are by bike or foot, 13% of traffic fatalities are bicyclists and pedestrians, and biking and walking receive less than 2% of federal transportation dollars. The report also highlights the connection between biking and walking and public health: states with the lowest levels of biking and walking have, on average, the highest rates of obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. In contrast states with the highest levels of biking and walking have, on average, the lowest rates of obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
The nearly 200-page report is a snap-shot of the state of bicycling and walking in the U.S. and in 50 states and the 51 largest U.S. cities. It contains a number of illustrations which you are welcome to use.

The instant turn is a way to turn a bike within 2 feet or less when you don't have space to stop, getting right hooked at a intersection for example. Preston starts by talking about the power position start and turn your bars when stopping. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jW74_LqEevc&feature=PlayList&p=9821AC79B17559DE&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=4

I live in Port Orchard and years ago I used to ride 200 miles a week, just riding. That was until I was knocked off my bike in Seattle. Due to my income it took years to get back to where I was able to ride again but not like before. I'm 57 yrs old and would like a riding partner for those just-in case situations.I do not race road, down hill or off road.... just ride or commute. Want to get back into touring. anyone interested?

I was at a W.S.F meeting last night in Bremerton and was informed that next fiscal meeting that raising bicycle fares are being considered for an incress in price. I do think that we knows what that means; a) how many riders feel safe leaveing thier bikes on the dock for the whole day? 2)Is there or will there be enough parking spots ?(remember that since 9/11 bikes can not leave ANY baggage on thier bikes like tools, cloth ,ect, 3) put a real crimp on rides like the Chilly Hilly, the Peninsula Metric Century as well as those casual personal rides around Vashon or summer touring through the San Juans . W.S.F. is pretty smart to wait till after summer to slide this through, after biking peak season. I mean public transit is eather getting expensive or cut and we ,the public are being encouraged to be more green and healthy. The way I see it for one van they get $13 and change off peak season where in the same space you can get 20 bikes at $1.00 a bike, well you do the math. Representive Kimer made the point that W.S.F. need to reaccess thier bookeeping ( like the boat enginners double overtime), and make changes before asking for more money. Keep your eyes open, access meeting minutes on line, watch for the ferry newpaper on board, get involved!!!

What is the distance from Kingston to Poulsbo and do the roads have good shoulders and how much traffic should we be prepared to encounter on a weekday? I saw a 24 mile loop that one of your members wrote about in the local paper and thought that would be nice to do on our second day in the area. We have never been in your area and don't know what to expect hill and traffic wise. Thank you for any info
